Roberts returned to WWE in 1996 and had a run as an in-ring competitor, and he wಌorked backstage as well. He was released in 1997, and he previously said that he felt too out of shape to compete. Roberts has also noted that he felt frustrated with his work backstage.
Speaking on his , Jake Roberts was asked about the end of h𝔍is time in WWE and his frustrations.
“I just got frustrated with the bullshit. I was just over the top frustrated [with] creative. Not given the opportunity to do what I was asked to do. They tell you they want you to do something, then you do it, and where the fuck do you go now? You’ve already put it out there, and they’re doing it, but oh well," Roberts said.
Ro⛦berts noted that Vince McMahon would call him in the middle of the night with ideas. When asked about McMahon ripping up scripts, Roberts confirmed that he did that as well. He was then asked whether he would talk to McMahon about his𒁃 behavior.
“It’s just, ‘Fuck it, I’m out.’ You can’t talk to somebody like that, man," Roberts said.
Roberts was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2014. He signed with AEW in 2020, and he became Lance Archer's manager. In October 2024, he joined forces with RUSH, Dralistico, and The B🍸east Mortos.
